We decided to sell nail studs and were brainstorming on what type of tool should be used to pick up and place the studs on wet painted nails. Myself and another product team member came up with the idea to incorporate the stem of the lacquer brush and have it be part of the cap and go right down into the bottle of studs. Below is the process from my concept drawings through my prototyping, the manufacturing and finished product called Design Dimensions.

Jeremy Newns - Original concept drawings, Sept 11 2014. Since I was using a lacquer bottle for the metal studs, my idea was to use the lacquer brush stem with a rubber tip as the tool to pick up and place the studs on freshly painted nails.

Jeremy Newns - Kitchen table prototyping on the weekend of Sept 13-14 2014. I bought different items made of soft silicones and synthetic rubbers (TPE) as those materials were most likely to hold on to the studs through surface tension.

Jeremy Newns - I tested multiple materials, even some I knew wouldnt do well so I could establish a baseline for success and improve from there.

Jeremy Newns - In the end, eight different materials were tested side by side and documented. I was looking for the ideal material to pick up the studs so I could then design the tip shape.

Jeremy Newns - I was on the floor factory when they did the first injection molding of the tip to test fit with the stem. China, Oct. 23 2014.

Jeremy Newns - I tested different plastics for the stem because it needed a stiffness that would not deform when pushed down into the bottle of metal studs.
