We began producing sparkle nails in early 2012 with an off the shelf pre-made sparkle film that came in a set range of colors and roll sizes, none of which were ideal but it was the best route to a minimum viable product and more catalog offerings. The color options were limited, the adhesion was mediocre and the roll size would not fit our new manufacturing method.
In the fall of 2013, I began working with our vinyl supplier and the manufacturer on developing a single sparkle product that would be the same vinyl we were using, the same adhesive and same roll size. The answer was to begin testing the idea of putting a fine silver metallic particulate into the hot liquid vinyl before it was formed into a rolled film and cooled. The vinyl manufacturer began working with several makers of glitter to source the right particle size and color, they would run small test batches and I would review and test. After several months of development and testing we had a sparkle vinyl that was ready for production. The creative team went nuts as their design options exploded. On the next catalog launch we went live with the new sparkle and it was a huge hit; sales of sparkle designs have increased ever since. Developing this film, which opened up so many new product offerings was one of those game changers that keep the signature product fresh, new and exciting.
